Kinja'd!!!

I know there are many timepiece fans here, and I’m in the market for an everyday watch. I’m looking to spend no more than $400. I’ve seen many options that I like from Seiko, Tissot, and Victorinox. I’d like it to be somewhat sporty, but still be able to be worn in a business meeting. Any suggestions? Thanks :)

$15 Timex, $385 on speed parts.

Joking aside, Amazon actually runs some specials/close outs from time to time. If you have the size for it to not look ridiculous, Invictas are usually a decent price.

I would check out Citizen, Bell and Ross, and the used market.

Or if you want to have watch overload...let me help

Beater watch, ready to spend $400, hahahahahahaha.

Where I come from $400 is a luxury watch that you take on special occasions. Or is this one of those cases that the US pays a large premium for something that in Europe costs a lot less.

On a recommendation scale I will go with Seiko or your own US based Fossil. Swatch is also a good brand that has very decent watches in different price segments. I have two beater Swatches that have worked perfectly for day to day use with me for 6 and 8 years.

My current two faves day in day out are both well sub-$400 watches - although neither are particularly sporty. I alternate between them most days, and both are solar powered so there’s no need to worry about them stopping if not worn, unlike my automatic ones.

The fancy one: Seiko Solar Prospex SSC081P1

The utilitarian one: Citizen Eco-Drive BM8475-00X

For an everyday watch, I don’t think you can really go wrong with any of these choices.

Of the 10 watches in that picture, which do you like best? It at least gives us some reference as to what we should recommend.

Had a Bell dealer next to my house for a decade, they always had some special or deal going on for a sub-$500 watch. Maybe someone hit it with a hammer first, but they existed.

I rock a fossil most of the time. It was about $100 and absolutely worth it. I am too rough on my watches to really spend more.

Used to have a Bulova that cost maybe $400...lost it.

Also, one thing to note, if you plan on wearing it in business environments, going with something that’s a bit more classic is better than something that’s too showy with a ton of complications. I find the simpler, classic watch can dress down nicely when you’re wearing jeans and your favourite flannel shirt and beard, but getting a really wacky, complicated piece to go well with a clean suit doesn’t work well at all.

A Tissot PR 100 or PR 200 is a good place to start (I’m not as familiar with US prices but I think this should fall within budget).

Really, anything of the watches you posted should work for all situations - you'll probably want to find something that mimics the qualities of one of these watches you posted: these are all classics for good reason.

Watches have such huge price ranges that something that might be expensive for one person is a beater for another.

My own watches range from $60 to $600 and I wear them all without being super careful.

Then there are the people that spend $1500 on a ‘beater’ or ‘tool’ watch and for who a nice watch will run into the $5000 to $10000 range and view them as investments.

Anyway... Suggestions for sporty but sleek enough for business and on the low end of the budget are the Casio Edifice watches. That's the first one that pops into my mind because I own one myself I guess.

The Speedmaster has a rotating bezel and metal bracelet. It is all sport. Depending on where you work I doubt anyone is going to pick up on the fact that you’re not wearing a dress watch with your suite.

I agree. I don't love bezels on everyday watches. I'm not a huge fan of the band on that Tissot though. The canter link seems very narrow.

I think "beater" might not have been the best term to use in this case. A beater watch is something used or a watch where if I get a scratch on the crystal or a ding in the case I won't mind. I spent close to $400 on my Tissot and was upset when it got its first scuff, but I suppose that's the sign of watch that has been worn frequently - no sense in having a watch if it's not being worn.

Lots of good choices already mentioned here. In the $400 range Tissot is solid, but you are not getting much more than in the $100-200 range. And why buy one watch when you can buy two? The Seiko below would also look great with a black band, and the Casio at the bottom is my $100 substitute for the $3000 Tag Carrera. Be careful,it’s a slippery slope...

I don’t really like metal watch bands anyway - I prefer leather, even if it does wear quicker and needs more care. The leather strap one would be my choice. The Tissot I have and wear regularly is this:

http://www.tissotwatches.com/en-CA/products…

I figure you can always change the band if you don't like it, unless you want to keep the watch 100% original.

Timex Expedition: 40$ at Walmart, waterproof to 50 meters, I’ve beat the snot out of this watch, spilled more automotive fluids on it than I’d like to admit, and it still cleaned up nicely! The strap is olive green canvas, and phenomenal, by the way.

I have a weakness for field watches - they’re simple enough to look good with casual clothes, but the classic styling works well with business attire as well. Despite owning two Victorinoxes, I’m a big fan of Hamiltons. They’re beautifully detailed in a way that Victorinoxes aren’t. I have a 42mm Day/Date Khaki that my wife gave me as a wedding present. It’s out of your price range, but there are several nice models that would work for you. Examples:

38mm Khaki Field Automatic

40mm Khaki King Day/Date

42mm Khaki Field Automatic

41mm Khaki Pilot Pioneer chrono

If you want something dressier, some of the Jazzmaster series can be found for under $400 as well.

That being said, a sub-$150 Seiko 5 will give you 80% of the style and 90% of the performance for 1/4 of the price.

Honestly, the case is a bit thicker than I’d like, but it wears well otherwise. I’m a statistically average male in most dimensions, and it’s about as big as I’d wear on my wrist. I like having the Day/Date complication and other than Seiko 5s, there are few that are thin so I can live with the extra thickness. A 10-11mm thick, 40mm diameter case is perfect in my eyes.

I think we have similar taste in looks as I own a Speedmaster Moonwatch and a Seamaster, but for daily use I generally wear 400-500 USD Hamiltons (I live in Mexico and would like to keep my arm and/or life). Swiss automatic movement (Swatch), nice design, brand with heritage and tradition. Can’t go wrong with a Khaki Navy (Seamasterish) or Khaki Field (oldschool military look). Just be sure to get an automatic.

Wait you’re in Europe and you’re saying $400 is a lot for a watch, and that Swatch is a good brand? I'm guessing you're not in Western Europe. Watches are actually sometimes cheaper in the US.

Well I am in Easter Europe and here luxurious items often are more expensive, but not in the case of watches, I suspect like with other things(motor oil, car parts) the watches manufactured for this region are not as good as in Western Europe or the US. But a quick glance reveals that an Omega Seamaster is around 15% cheaper than on Amazon UK.

I am just saying that here $400 bucks don’t buy a watch for everyday use, but different standards I guess.

Also as I said I have two Swatches that are working perfectly and the one with a leather strap is even on the original one after 6 years.
